It is named in the honour of indian warrior, Maharana Pratap. The lake was discovered in 1975 and soon was turned into a wildlife sanctuary as a home to some major migratory and endangered birds. The lake is famous for its pilgrimage trek called as “Manimahesh Yatra” that starts in August. It is situated close to the Holy Lake Mansarovar in Tibet. According to popular legends it is believed that Lord Shiva created this lake after he married Goddess Parvati, who is worshiped as Mata Girja here. The lake is famous among all the buddhist monks and several visit during the year. The lake is supposed to have some links with the China through a long tunnel.
